Schools
CBSE, IB and State Board schools: recognition, affiliation and everyday compliance.
A school in India, whether affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, a State Board or the International Baccalaureate (IB), is run by a society, a public trust or a Section 8 company. A private school needs recognition from the State Education Department and, for a board, affiliation or authorisation under the rules of that board.
The main laws are the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which requires private unaided schools to reserve seats for children from weaker and disadvantaged sections; the State laws and rules on recognition and fee regulation; the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012; the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013; and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which requires verifiable parental consent for the data of a child.
Each board has its own conditions of affiliation on land, infrastructure, staff qualifications and the governing body. These conditions and the State rules change from time to time, so a school should confirm the current position with its board and its State before acting.
