UGC: Initiative towards Elimination of Single Use Plastic

The University Grants Commission in continuance to letter dated 30.09.2019 ­– swachata hi sewa hai – through a letter dated 07.06.2021, D.O.No. 14-912021 urged Higher Education Institutions to reduce the use of plastic, especially single-use plastic. The Commission has additionally issued guidelines, the details of which have been made available on the official website.
In order to achieve the objective of ‘Elimination of Single Use of Plastic’, the Commission suggests adopting the following approaches by Higher Education Institutions to create and raise awareness among different groups:

  • Essay competition among students
  • Activities by organizations like NCC, NSS, Nehru Yuva Kendra, etc
  • Hackathons among students and start-ups to promote innovation in the areas of alternate materials, recycling, circular economy, etc

The Commission has also urged all the Higher Education Institution and its affiliated colleges and institutions to implement the suggestions while directing them to upload the relevant information on the University Activity Monitoring Portal (UAMP) of UGC https://ugc.ac.in/uamp/ These suggestions are to be implemented with strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines issued by the Government of India.
