UGC Announces Maternity Leave for Women Students

14th December 2021, the University Grants Commission (UGC) released a notice announcing the provision of Maternity Leave for Women Students pursuing M.Phil./Ph.D. The details of it are enshrined in the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./ Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016.
The regulation provides:
“The women candidate may be provided Maternity Leave /Child Care Leave once in the entire duration of M.Phil./Ph.D. for up to 24O days.”
In addition, UGC has asked the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for framing rules or norms relating to maternity leave for students pursuing their undergraduate or post graduate degrees from the respective institutions or affiliated colleges. UGC has also asked for providing necessary relaxation and exception to those students relating to attendance, submission of projects, examination forms and any other facilities which are deemed to be necessary.
